This may happen when the physical condition causing the pain is unresolved such as cancer or arthritis. Sometimes acute pain transitions to chronic pain. It usually resolves right away or may last up to three months. It may be caused by broken bones or cuts. Acute pain begins suddenly and feels sharp. Some benefit from OTC or prescription-strength NSAIDs (ibuprofen aka Motrin) while others may need something stronger, such as an opioid.
